About the C Lazy U Ranch

C Lazy U Ranch where eagles, elk, moose and deer roam
The C Lazy U Ranch has been in operation for over 90 years, offering superb dude ranch vacations to families with a focus on horsemanship, the outdoors and warm, western hospitality. At over 8,000 acres of land, the owners are committed to preserving the wild, untamed aspects of this Colorado landscape. Eagles make their homes here, while elk, moose and deer roam the meadows and drink in the rivers.

The C Lazy U’s mission is to “always exceed guest expectations by providing superior service, accommodations, dining, activities and amenities while honoring and preserving the traditions of the great American West.”

Gourmet food served at every meal – even those meals taken out on the range – is just one way the ranch cares for their guests. Updated, renovated cabins are luxuriously appointed with Simmons Beverly Hills Black Edition pillow top mattresses and fine bed linens for the ultimate in a good night’s sleep.

Besides the hunting program, available activities include fly fishing in private streams, horseback riding, trap shooting, archery, mountain biking, tennis and an outdoor ropes course with a zip line. In the evenings, you can usually find a friendly poker game or play billiards in the patio house game room, or sit around a campfire while the stars shine brightly overhead. However you want to spend your time, the friendly and attentive service staff is more than ready to help you make the most of your vacation.

Ranch History

The story begins with two families and two ranches. Both the Smillies and McQuearys were territorial pioneers of Colorado. Aubrey Fenton “Jack” Smillie was born in Eaton, CO and Gertrude McQueary was born on a ranch at Dexter adjacent to the one on Willow Creek that became the F Slash and ultimately the C Lazy U. In fact, the two ranches were connected by what the families came to refer to as “the Midnight Trail.” Gertrude’s father Milton Green McQueary ran the inn at Dexter and the post office known as Dexter (this building is now our “Dexter House,” used for staff housing.

From the Horse's Mouth

“The Hunt of a Lifetime!”

All of the guides work as a team with one goal in mind, finding elk. It was unseasonably warm during my elk hunt and I along with my guides hiked an average of seven hours a day tirelessly looking for the elusive elk. Finally, on the last day of my hunt at the last hour I took my 55 yard shot and got my elk. The guides and staff at C Lazy U Ranch are top notch and work hard to make sure you have the hunt of a lifetime. I know I did.
